HKS Dry Carbon Full Cold Air Intake Kit #70028-AT001 – 2020-2025 Toyota GR Supra A90 (B58 3.0T)
- Description
HKS Dry Carbon Full Cold Air Intake Kit for the A90 Supra — Sealed Airbox, Real Cold-Air Feed, JDM Build Quality
The 2020+ Toyota GR Supra A90 factory airbox is well-designed for OEM power targets and terrible for a tuned B58. HKS's Dry Carbon Full Cold Air Intake Kit replaces the entire OEM system — airbox, filter housing, and inlet tract — with a sealed dry-carbon enclosure that pulls genuine cold air from the fender, not heat-soaked engine bay air. This is the intake you buy when you're done chasing power adders that shave a tenth and want a piece that actually re-shapes the intake charge.
Why the OEM A90 Airbox Loses Power on a Tuned Car
The stock B58 airbox routes cold air through the front bumper, but the filter housing itself sits inside a hot engine bay with a plastic lid that heat-soaks after 10 minutes of driving. On the dyno you can watch intake air temperature (IAT) climb 20–40°F over ambient in stop-and-go, and the ECU pulls timing to protect the engine — silently robbing you of the power your tune paid for.
"Cone filter on a stick" intakes make the problem worse: they eliminate the OEM cold-air ducting entirely and inhale radiator air. That's why aggressive-looking open intakes often net-lose power on a datalog vs. the OEM box. HKS's approach — a full sealed enclosure fed by the factory cold-air duct — fixes both problems at once.
What Changed vs. OEM
- Full dry-carbon airbox and lid — pre-preg dry carbon, autoclave cured. Not a wet-lay skin over plastic. Sheds heat rather than absorbing it.
- Sealed enclosure design — draws only from the factory bumper duct, isolates the filter from engine bay heat.
- HKS high-flow dry filter element — reusable, cleanable, designed for the airbox airflow curve.
- Retained OEM MAF housing and sensor location — no ECU re-scaling required, tune-agnostic install.
- Direct-fit inlet coupling — matches OEM inlet ID exactly. No adapters, no silicone reducers.
- OEM-quality mounting hardware — uses factory mount points, no modification to the chassis or fender liner.
Verified Performance Gains
| Setup | WHP Gain | WTQ Gain | IAT Reduction | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stock ECU + HKS intake | +3–7 whp | +5–10 wtq | 10–15°F cooler cruising | HKS product literature, US dyno reports |
| Stage 1 tune + HKS intake | +8–15 whp over tune alone | +12–20 wtq over tune alone | 15–25°F cooler under load | MHD user datalogs, SupraMKV forum comparisons |
| Stage 2 + intake + DP + charge pipe | Full 450+ whp package on 93 oct | 450+ wtq | Sustained near-ambient IAT | Vivid Racing, Eurowerke dyno pulls |
Peak-number gains from any intake alone are modest. The real value shows on datalogs: sustained lower IAT means the ECU stops pulling timing in traffic, on hot days, and during repeated pulls — you actually keep the horsepower your tune promised.

Install Notes (Real Gotchas)
- Plan on 60–90 minutes. This is an approachable driveway job — hood open, three OEM airbox bolts, disconnect MAF, unclip inlet, drop OEM assembly, reverse for HKS.
- Handle the MAF sensor carefully. The B58 MAF is glass-hair-fine and easy to damage. Never touch the sensor element with fingers or a rag.
- Verify the cold-air duct seal. The whole point of this intake is the sealed feed from the bumper. Check the perimeter gasket seats fully before closing the hood — a partial seal negates the IAT benefit.
- Torque the coupler clamps evenly. Over-torque splits the carbon; under-torque leaks boost on the return side.
- Clean the filter every 15–20k miles. HKS filter oil kit sold separately. Don't use K&N oil — different oil chemistry can foul the MAF.
- No ECU reset needed for a stock car. Tuned cars: no re-flash required either, since the MAF stays OEM.
Do You Actually Need This?
| Your setup | Should you buy? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Stock A90, no tune, occasional weekend drives | Optional | Sound and cosmetic gain are real; power gain is small on a stock car. |
| Stage 1 tune (91/93 oct) | Yes | IAT reduction lets your tune actually hold timing. Real driveability gain. |
| Stage 2, downpipe, charge pipe | Yes — required part of the package | Airflow demand exceeds OEM airbox capacity. |
| Track / autocross with repeated pulls | Yes | Heat-soak recovery time is dramatically shorter with the sealed dry-carbon box. |
| Chasing max HP on E85 | Move up to Eventuri or AMS | Both have larger inlet CFM; HKS is the balanced street/track pick, not the max-power pick. |
FAQ
Do I need a tune to run this?
No. The OEM MAF stays in its factory position, so the ECU sees no change in metering. Works on a bone-stock A90.
Will it fit under the OEM hood?
Yes. Direct OEM replacement — no clearance issues, no hood modification.
Is dry carbon really different from wet carbon?
Yes, functionally and cosmetically. Dry carbon (pre-preg, autoclave-cured) is stiffer, lighter, and doesn't yellow or delaminate under heat. Wet-lay carbon skins on plastic are cosmetic only.
How does it compare to Eventuri and AMS?
Eventuri offers slightly higher peak-CFM flow but is nearly 30% more expensive. AMS carbon intake is the max-flow pick for 500+ whp builds. HKS is the balanced choice for street-tuned A90s that also see track days — best value per real-world horsepower.
Can I use it in the rain?
Yes. The sealed airbox and factory bumper duct route water away from the filter identically to OEM.
What sound changes should I expect?
Slightly louder induction whoosh on tip-in and turbo spool. Not aggressive — still refined. If you want an intake that sings, pair this with a catless downpipe.
Kinetic Install & Tuning
Kinetic Autoworks installs the HKS Dry Carbon intake with a pre/post-install datalog to confirm IAT reduction and verify the MAF signal is clean. If you're pairing it with a Stage 1 or Stage 2 tune, we bundle install + MHD or bootmod3 flash + one custom map revision in a single visit.
